SECURITY GUARDS COURSE INFORMATION
There are Two Units for this City and Guilds and SIA nationally recognised qualification:

UNIT 1 of the National Certificate for Security Guards Course
The aim is to provide student security guards with sufficient knowledge so that they can evaluate their work environment and cut down the risks to the 3 x P’s - People, Property and Premises. This is done by supplying effective security measures which deal with incidents in accordance with agreed legal procedures.

There are 12 Outcomes to this Unit of the Security Guards Course. The student will be able to:

1. Identify the roles and responsibilities of the Security Guard
2. Identify the requirements for effective patrolling
3. Identify the requirements for controlling access
4. Identify the requirements for search procedures
5. Identify security and emergency systems and procedures
6. Recognise requirements for dealing with fire
7. Identify requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act
8. Identify the role and powers of the Security Guard in law
9. Identify requirements for dealing with emergencies
10. Identify requirements for customer care
11. Identify requirements for effective communication
12. Recognise equality and diversity in the workplace

UNIT 2 of the National Certificate for Security Guards Course
The aim is to provide student security guards with sufficient basic understanding to enable them to deal effectively with incidents of workplace violence.

There are 3 Outcomes to this Unit of the Security Guards Course. The student security guard will be able to:

1. Assess and reduce the risk of violence in the work environment
2. Identify behaviour that indicates an escalation towards violence and take appropriate measures to avoid or calm and defuse the situation
3. Identify post incident support and report the circumstances to provide information for personal and organisation learning

Success Graduates of the Security Guards Course receive a FULL Award of C&G 1902
Level 2 National Certificate for Security Guards - City and Guilds 1902
To achieve The City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Security Guards students need to complete fully both Unit One and Unit Two.

Connections with other awards
The City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Security Guards is designed as part of a progression award to prepare students working towards achieving the associated NVQs and the underpinning knowledge contained within the specific units:

Level 2 NVQ in Providing Security Services
National Occupational Standards in Managing Work Related Violence.

General Information
This vocationally related Security Guards Course has been designed by City & Guilds to support government initiatives towards the National Qualifications Framework. It offers a flexible approach to enable individual students an opportunity to achieve a qualification relevant to their individual learning and employment needs. It also provides a cost effective pathway for businesses (public and private) to ensure meeting the required standards for staff with security guard duties.

The Global Aspects of the Curriculum
The City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Security Guards substantially addresses spiritual, moral, ethical, social and cultural issues as they apply to or can be derived from training for the role of working in the security industry.

Spiritual, Ethical and Other Issues
Delivery of this qualification can contribute to students’ understanding of spiritual, moral, ethical, social and cultural issues in the following manner:

Spiritual/Moral/ethical: Appreciating individual’s religious beliefs and gender issues when carrying out the role of a Security Guard can lead to discussion on moral/ethical issues. Spiritual issues can be raised when learning how to communicate and develop effective relationships with colleagues. For example, outcome 12: Recognise equality and diversity in the workplace leads to discussing various Acts including Race relations, Sex discrimination and Race Relations Act.

Social/Cultural: There is an emphasis throughout this qualification for learners to interact with others, their peers, assessors/trainers, supervisors, work colleagues and customers. Social and cultural issues can arise through requirements for search procedure, customer care, equality and diversity.

Environment/Health and Safety/European
The Level 2 Certificate for Security Guards also provides awareness of environmental issues, health and safety considerations and European development through outcome 7: Identify the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act.

SIA Specifications
The City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Security Guards maps directly to the SIA Specification for Core Competency Training and Qualifications for Security Guarding.

Relationship to NVQ units
It also contributes to some of the knowledge and understanding of various NVQ Units within the national occupational standards in Managing Work Related Violence.
